safety in
public space
A warning sign for modern public behaviour in the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands
12/2021
As a young female from the countryside, moving to the city of Rotterdam, I am finding my way within the artificial/societal structures that are present in this city. In this environment, I encounter issues such as street intimidation and the disbalance in ‘owning’ space between the sexes of men and women. As a female artist,
I want to stand for what I believe needs enlightening and by that, I want to share a new perspective.
My project raises awareness about the impact of intergraded structures of a big city (such as street intimidation) on women's nature. I believe raising this topic is important because this accepted disbalance gives women unnecessary precarity and emotional labour which contribute to further consequences.
Through this artistic practice, the aim has been to explore and guard the boundaries of female safety.
Through this work, I create a shift in perspectives and open up a conversation about today’s male behaviour
for the next generations, inspiring behavioural change.
This video message is a future proposal working as a conversation piece, contributing to behavioural change.
For this project, I created a tool as research instrument to collect data from different sexes and ages in the location of Rotterdam. The insights from theoretical, social and visual research contribute to the end product of a future scenario, storytelling that is disruptive for the mind.
Aim; trigger thoughts and questions, providing a space to have a conversation about the urgency of the topic.
